Hoffman Making Big News At CPAC Today

We heard several reports today by e-mail and news stories that Doug Hoffman was in Washington today building support with conservative activists at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. Mr. Hoffman even won an award tonight, "Courage Under Fire," at the national conference which draws thousands of conservative activists and donors from around the country.

In addition, we learned that Doug Hoffman joined Dick Armey to launch the Contract From America, an effort that emulates the Contract for America that Newt Gingrich promoted upon the Conservative Revolution in 1994.

Below are two links to stories we found online from Hoffman's participation at CPAC today. It looks like Doug Hoffman might be the first candidate to make his true intention to run for Congress in NY-23. He does so making the case that he is a uniter of the various fractions of the Republican, Conservative and Tea-Party movements and he also offers a smart alternative to Representative Bill Owens, who Hoffman says is vulnerable because of his votes on government take over of health care and higher spending.

"Owens has violated every one of his campaign promises. From health care to spending, he's vulnerable." Hoffman points to Scott Brown's Senate win in Massachusetts as proof that conservatives can win in the northeast this year. "But he wasn't the first guy to drive a truck on the trail... Look for me in my '55 Chevy."

"We feel very very good about it [the Hoffman campaign for the 23rd]. I think the fact that Bill Owens violated three campaign promises the day he was sworn in, like voting for the health care bill, is going to give us a lot of leverage. I intend to reunite the Republicans, Conservatives, the teaparty groups and the other activists in defeating Bill Owens this year."

  1. None, or atleast very few, of these people actually live within NY-23 or care about our issues. I don't want a "celebrity" as my member of Congress - I want someone who knows our issues and has lived those issues. The only person who's lived here at their lives is Will Barclay. He's got my support regardless of what these national conservatives say. And I think if any of them cared to look at Will, they'd find he's just as Conservative as any other candidate running for Congress.

  3. Next you all will be saying that Doug Hoffman is the second coming of the old Gipper with views like this: "Hoffman says Owens is vulnerable because of his votes on government take over of health care and higher spending.

Government take over - do tell.

Let's review Reagan's "conservative" record and see how old Dougout Doug meaures up, shall we? This outta get your veins a poppin':

They follow the standard GOP-RWer calls for “smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes.”

    * Smaller government: The Federal employment grew by 61,000 during Reagan’s presidency, in part because Reagan created a whole new cabinet department, the Department of Veteran’s affairs. (Under Bill Clinton federal employment dropped by 373,000).

    * Smaller deficits and debt: Both nearly tripled on Reagan’s watch.

    * Lower taxes: Although Reagan muscled through a major tax cut in 1981 he followed up by raising taxes in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1986. Then in 1983, he not only raised payroll taxes but he raised them to pay for Social Security and Medicare. [Let's put that in lingo that today’s TEA party folks will understand: Reagan raised taxes to pay for government-run health care].

    * "Oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.” Under the word “amnesty” in Black’s Law Dictionary, you’ll find a reference to the 1986 bill that Reagan signed, which granted amnesty to 2.7 million illegal immigrants.

    * Foreign Policy: The GOP-RWers demand that candidates back the surges in Iraq and Afghanistan. What did Reagan do in his biggest confrontation with Jihadist terrorists when Hezbollah murdered 243 U.S. servicemen in the Beirut barracks bombing in 1983? Did he surge? Nope. In he withdrew the remaining American troops quickly and invaded Grenada to free some American medical students.

    * Strong and “effective [read military] action” to eliminate Iran and North Korean nuclear programs. Why did Reagan condemned Israel’s 1981 preventive strike against an Iraqi nuclear reactor?

    * Be steadfast against abortion. Two of Reagan’s three Supreme Court nominees voted to uphold Roe v. Wade.

As it turns out this guy Ronald Wilson Reagan wasn’t really that much of a fan of Reaganite standards the GOP-RWers pursue after all.

Maybe Doug Hoffman will reinstatement them?

  4. Rush Limbaugh was the "keynote"/closing speaker last year at CPAC ... this year they chose Glenn Beck. Folks: that outta tell you something about the warped mindset of those "conservatives" who claim to stand for America ... IMHO.
