Owens Gives Away His Vote to Pelosi & Betrays the People of NY-23

Today, the race for NY-23 just lost another candidate, incumbent Congressman Bill Owens, who told Nancy Pelsoi she could have his vote for Bigger Government this morning. Owens made his decision before he even finished reading the bill. You can read Owens' justification here. When you read it you almost have to wonder whether Owens' staff could write it with a straight face. At least now we really know how liberal Owens is, and now we know he is more liberal than his Democratic colleague, Michael Arcuri, who said he is voting no tomorrow.

I must admit that there was never actually any doubt in my mind about where Owens stood on this issue, but some people thought he would at least listen to his constituents and realize that a large majority of people are against this plan. But Owens chose a partisan path and people are continuing to ask themselves, "Where are the jobs and how will our state survive?" With his decision today, Owens basically just told every person who called him, visited him, wrote him or met with his staff to go bug off. So tomorrow Owens is voting to spend your tax dollars on the bribes we wrote about earlier this week: the Louisiana Purchase, the Cornhusker Kickback, the Gator-Aid and the Husky Hospital. But what did Owens get for NY-23? He got a commitment from Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama for some extra campaign cash and union assistance this coming November.

Saying, "the math is sound on this bill," Owens continues to claim that this bill will lower premiums and that Medicare beneficiaries will see their coverage improve. Both of these statements are patently false though. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office makes it clear that this bill requires 10 years of tax increases and 10 years of Medicare cuts to pay for just 6 years of benefits. The American people don't want this bill and they realize that 10 years of payments are not worth just 6 years of benefits. They know there is a better way -- a bipartisan way. You can ask the Democratic Whip of the United States Senate who spoke very clearly on these issues: Medicare cuts and premium increases. Senator Durbin confirms that the Medicare program will be cut. In the second video clip, he also confirms that your premiums will rise.

After you see a fellow Democrat expose Bill Owens on these issues ask yourself if this Big Government take-over is the right thing for our health care system, our children and our grandchildren. Do we want to bankrupt the Medicare program and tax our middle class to pay for a government take-over of our health care system? Ask yourself if you want to continue down this path of reckless spending and higher taxes. We should shelve this bill and start fresh. We can do that just as soon as we shelve Bill Owens and put someone else in his office to do the job of the people. Remember this weekend this coming November.

  2. The right public policy is to vote "yes" for health care reform. There is no debate on that issue. The political aspects is debatable for Rep. Owens. A "no" would lose him the support of a good portion of his base. But it is very doubtful that people who voted against him last year would support him this year because of a "no" vote on health care. Thus, a "yes" vote is his best choice politically too. This doesn't mean he'll win this year. It's just his best choice.

So there you go - he made it know from the beginning - no shock there.

    Deal with it.

  4. You say Owens betrays the people of the 23rd? Let me say a few things about that, Bugs, old buddy.

Using the word betrayal is pretty harsh, but since you opened up that can of worms, let me say that if anyone “betrayed” the American people or the good citizens of this district with their lock-step, just say “No,” resist everything and anything, do nothing, and just be downright nasty, then that is the GOP side of Congress.

Those in the GOP in office right now continue to let the people down and try to gain traction of things they stood for only a year or two ago and then they expect people to be dumb and just stand with them? That’s a joke. The rabid partisanship has blinded the GOP, and BTW, I have many good friends who are Republicans and I respect their views and a lot of them are angry at the GOP, too. Maybe not as outspoken as I am, but nevertheless, they are angry, too.

I say pass the bill then look at any weaknesses or gaps or whatever, and fix it. Just like we have with other critical issues in the past that NOW serve us well like Social Security, Medicare, the GI Bill, and a few other beneficial bills.

Also, this health care reform will to a great extent benefit a very large population of this district with the dire economic situation many people are in up around here – that is a fact.

For everyone in Congress I say this, why are you afraid to work for positive change? Why are you afraid of taking a firm stand of getting out front on hard issues? I leave them and you, Bugs, old Buddy, with this old military phrase: "Lead, follow, or get out of the way."

You have bitten off and swallowed the conservative grail. This bill is of beginning of a place we should have been 40 years ago. Decent health insurance for all is a responsibility we have. Your notion of an intrusive government suggests you would give up standardized public education, SS, Medicare, and at its extreme the protection of a host of rights granted by the Constitution.
I will remember Bill Owens vote in November and donate time and money in hopes we can keep a clear and moral voice representing NY-23.

While the GOP spends its time lying about health care, trying to scare people with outrageous and fictitous stories about "death panels", etc., we finally have in place someone who knows what they are talking about. The GOP doesn't even have a plan.

  19. What those of you who say he "didn't listen to the people" really mean is that he didn't listen to YOU. You are not "the people" and you are not even "the people" of this district. I am making an educated guess that the vast majority of those people who are saying he "lost your vote" would never have voted for him anyway. I am glad to see that thousands of lives will be saved by this bill and that Owens did the right thing. The greed and selfishness of people never fails to amaze me.

But in reading what constitutes a Cadillac Plan- looks like that will all go down the drain as my company will not be able to afford to insure us anymore! Not insure and pay the fines that the Government will impose on them. Thank you Mr. Owens!
You people think that this is free! See what happens to your FICA Tax if it passes. That and you won't receive any of this so called care until 2014!By then the Government will have put the insurance companies out of business. Obama has already stated that he wants single payer healthcare. Then you'll see healthcare rationed- Hello death panels. Government officials deciding whether you should receive cancer drugs instead of your Dr. If you have a premi, they will decide whether or not it lives or dies. If a Grandparent has already used a certain $ amount they will decide on continueing care not they themselves or the family.

  23. If Owens needed to consult so many sources, the bill is no good! It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that voting for imperfection is not the only solution. You seek perfection and look to make it right...not settle. Owens settled for something instead of looking for the RIGHT thing. Once again, no gonads Owens. What did you get for the 23rd? I can't believe that you would not have taken something akin to the four other deals . YOu are pathetic. I am not surprised.

We get to go directly to the government well guess what they will be able to charge any rate of interest or better yet tell you what kind of education you can have. think about it this is about the government out of control. Your President stated today in his partisan only meeting that the days of 5 tests will end!! Well what are you going to do if the one and only test doesn't find your cancer or heart disease?? these were his words today -saturday around 3:30pm. What do you think about those apples- I will do everything in my travels through the NY 23 and enlighten the people to vote against Mr Owens!!! enjoy your year in office

  25. Owens broke 4 campaign promises the very next day after he was sworn in. His bribe for HCR is for SCIU campaign cash. SCIU underfunded their pension plan. 34. I am a registered Democrat, and resident of NY-23 and I applaud Bill Owens for voting Yes on the Health Care Reform Act.

Despite all the claims that the debt that this bill generates will be tragic and cause problems for our children- Let us just recognize this fact:

When inflation and rates of previous economic circumstances are accounted for, the debt incurred by our progenitors in this country and then consequently repaid proves that this is a nation that operates on cycles. Debt is incurred, then it is repaid (illustrated by the surplus that was generated by the Clinton Administration and then squandered by the 8 years of the Bush Administration).

'Debt' in the terms of the everyday taxpayer is personal. 'Debt' in the terms of the government is practically useless.

Instead of focusing on how much this will COST, let us instead look at the fact that this bill will be helping MILLIONS of people get health care for their families. People will not be up awake late at night with gnawing worries as to whether to pay their power bill/mortgage/gas bill/food bill versus paying for medicine/dental/eye/vaccines/tests/care that their children need.

This isn't about money. It is about doing what's right for our future. What do parents do? We incur an Atlas-worthy amount of work on our shoulders to care for those we love. It isn't right in AMERICA of all places on earth, that we cannot provide simple care for our children, OR our parents. Baby Boomers are becoming a massive issue to care for as well.

This bill will lower costs for the every day taxpayer. That will mean they have more money to invest in other aspects of the economy. Hospitals will get more money so they do not have to fire nurses to save money. More jobs will be created this way.

That old saying is true "You have to spend money to make money." It was true when the Obama Administration stopped the massive economic collapse with that huge bill, and it is true in this sense as well.

The insurance industry is a business. It is in the business of making money, of generating as much of a profit as possible. They make money on the needs of the people. They know that people need healthcare, and will pay through the nose to get it. I have nothing personal against the insurance industry- its doing its job. What I have a problem with is how they do their job.

People scream that they want the bank CEOs to get a fixed salary, that "it isn't right that they make so much" and they want the government to fix it. Yet, when the insurance industry (who is generating profits just like the banks) does the same thing, you scream "NO Government, leave it alone!!" Are you aware of how much insurance industry CEOs are paid annually? You'd be just as enraged at them as the banks. And all of the money they are paid is drained off of the people struggling to survive.

Does that sound right to you?

You can't have it both ways.

This bill is chemotherapy for the nation. At first it will be a painful struggle- like any major change is, and it will take time to work through it and make it the most effective system- but then the health of the people will be restored, rebalanced, and given a new bright future.

No plan is perfect, it never will be. But this is a great place to start working towards the betterment of America and its hardworking people. When Medicare was introduced by Lyndon Johnson and Social Security was introduced by FDR, they were both EXTREMELY unpopular and the arguments were very like the ones we're hearing now.

But see if anyone will go without either today. Nope. Now it is seen as an entitlement to the people to get both. As it should be because they paid for it. Just as they will pay for this bill. As I will pay for it. Gladly.

I will vote again for Bill Owens, and I will pay higher the higher taxes/monthly premiums if it means my children can get the care they deserve.

  39. At a time when most of us are realizing that the government is out of control, "Health Care Reform" would establish a new very costly role for the the federal government and give it yet another regulatory tool for increasing the cost of living in America.

What makes you think government can do it better? Surely you are aware that England, Canada, and other countries that have socialized medicine are going broke trying to pay for system of care that is much worse than what we have now.

Passage of this legislation will insure that:

    1. Wait times for care will increase
    2. Health Care will be rationed
    3. Patient choice will be diminished
    4. Overall Care will diminish

The system we have in place now is not perfect, in fact it needs to be reformed. But putting health care in the hands of the government with all of its inefficiencies is not the answer.

  43. My final 2 cents - for what it's worth:

If the bill passes, and if anyone in Congress has any fortitude left afterwards, assuming there are glitches and there will be some (maybe even many), would be for them to work together (if that’s possible these days) and fix and repair any glitches to make the bill better the way we want it to work for everyone ... laws can be changed. Not an easy prospect, but it can be done.

I believe that when the bill kicks in and people see the positive side, the impact that it has on their current situation (especially those without any care or coverage or just hanging out there at the mercy of “I have to stay health if possible”) that most will sign on and rally behind it.

There was a ton of fear over SS in 1936 and just as much fear about Medicare in 1965. Now look today, both are working pretty smoothly and benefiting millions who would probably not be with us today without those two very good programs helping them, and that’s not even counting the GI Bill, which brought this country back from the brink after WWII. Those are things we must not forget. We should ignore the political hype and fear-mongering.

The unknown is always scary, of course ... but it's one chance we must take. I say, get behind the bill and help make it work. — Dan Francis

  47. This whole line of "argument" is sickening...some anonymous person says the bill will:
    1. Wait times for care will increase
    2. Health Care will be rationed
    3. Patient choice will be diminished
    4. Overall Care will diminish

What this person is saying in simple terms is that the people who have health care (often not out of hard work or great planning, but simply having a specific type of job) are not willing to give up anything to help the less fortunate. You are disgusting. You have to wait longer because there are 31 million more people who are finally able to get to see a doctor? Poor you...poor poor you. You can't see the exact doctor you want so that 31 million other, deserving, people can get to see *any* doctor....again, oh poor poor callous, selfish, disgusting you. America is great because of our generosity, that we don't leave people behind, that we help each other. I am willing to wait a bit longer to see a doctor, to pay a bit more in taxes, or to sacrifice a bit so that others can be helped. We teach our children to be more mature than this and the arguments these adults are making is just disgusting.

  50. Cynthia Taylor, I know you are eager to be an approved member of the sheeple and are addicted to the kool-aid but two points 1) The Republicans were in charge of Congress when 'Clinton' built that surplus, so they are the ones who saved the money in budgets and cost cutting legislation. 2) The D-rats were in charge of Congress when 'Bush' squandered all that surplus and then some so guess who wrote the budgets and wasted the money. Also, if the insurance companies are as bad as claimed and are at fault for the health care mess, why is the federal gov't attempting to force another 40 million customers on them? 60. Boone315, thank you for the rebuttal. And for not bothering to spell my name correctly, and for not offering your own name (I prefer a name to name basis during debate, as I'm not afraid to put my name to what I say. Which is not to say that anyone NOT putting their real name down is wrong. Indeed, you have chosen to put the tag on your comment for any number of reasons, and it is absolutely your right and business to do so, regardless of my own standing towards it.).

As for your points: 1) Yes, the Republicans were in control of Congress during the Clinton Administration and the fact stands that most of the gains made were done due to BI-PARTISANSHIP, which obviously does not occur now. Clinton signed what the Congress put through. That signifies that he (and the Democrats) agreed enough with the legislation proposed to make it happen and to allow it to benefit the people.

2)The "D-rats" as you so eloquently call them were only in the majority for the first two years of G.W.Bush's first term. e.g.:

"The current President Bush had a Democratic-controlled Senate for less than two years, after Sen. Jim Jeffords, I-Vt., left the GOP in May 2001 and until Republicans regained control in the 2002 elections."
    -Susan Page, USA Today.com http://usatoday.printthis.clickability.com/pt/cpt?action=cpt&expire=&urlID=7199566&fb=Y&partnerID=1660

In the next election season in, Republicans continued to control Congress until this last election season.

As to "forcing" forty million Americans onto the health care industry, the increase in participants will allow the industry to spread out the cost of its "higher-risk participants" thereby lowering the costs to all. (Please see the link below for a more complete explanation of this measure.)

This is an excellent, clear break-down of the Health Care Reform Act, written in the Christian Science Monitor. I suggest you read it, educate yourself, (I'll let the spelling slide) and then form your rebuttal. I am perfectly happy to debate the points of this system, provided that I am not wasting my time talking to someone who does not bother to educate themselves on the topic.

Thank you for the rebuttal, I sincerely mean that. I respect and applaud you taking that right in your hands and using it, even if you don't put your name on it. Free speech is for all in this nation, even if I don't agree with what you have to say. It is through these means that the people learn and decide for themselves how they wish to go forwards. And I will give that BOTH sides, Democrat and Republican could do that MUCH more than they do now.

PS: Kool-Aid has too much sugar, I drink fruit juice instead.

  61. Hey all you Anonymous posters out there in laa laa land: Does this impact you?

    1. Seniors will get a $250 rebate to close Medicare's so-called "doughnut hole," insurance help for early retirees, and a way to pay for long-term care.

    2. Coverage now will go to 27,000 currently uninsured.

    3. Some 65,000 young adults (under age 27) can remain on their parents' plans.

    4. Some 177,000 families and more than 12,000 small businesses would receive tax credits to help pay for health insurance.

How's that grab you? Your silence is deafening.

  65. We need total repeal, not even this watered down "repeal and replace." While I don't share the view of my more mature TEA Bagger Buds that the USA is doomed to a socialist demise (we'll get a Republican Congress and White House before any real damage is done), we need to take a hard line on this one and then start working our. It may take us a few years to undue the pork barrel buffet the Dems have laid out over the years (and that W could not seem to curtail), but I think we need to think long term.
