While Leaving NY-23 Race Will Barclay Beats Up on Political Cynicism

Assemblyman Will Barclay got out of the race for NY-23 tonight. The main theme that Barclay leaves us with is that he did not want to skirt his "duty" to the New York State Assembly which is currently in disarray. In an e-mail message sent out to supporters tonight Barclay took a hard shot at what he describes as the cynicism of politics.

Barclay eloquently wrote, "I fully expect and resign myself to accepting that my citing duty as the reason for my decision will be dismissed by some, perhaps by many, with cynical comments. So be it... It was, I freely admit, very tempting to excuse myself from the ever worsening woes of Albany." That kind of open and honest dialogue is what voters are longing for in today's politics. It was a theme the former candidate could have utilized earlier on in his bid to gain traction for the Republican nomination.

For sure Barclay's decision to leave the race for NY-23 is a bit of an indication of how hard it is to compete against a populist, conservative Republican juggernaut in Doug Hoffman and a self-financing Banker-Lawyer from Manhattan in Matt Doheny. Regardless, Barclay may still have a very bright future in politics and What's Up NY-23 wants to wish Mr. Barclay the best in his effort to represent the people of the 124th Assembly district in Albany.

  2. I'm sad to see Barclay go, but I think he made the right decision. We need his leadership in Albany and the good people down there are few and far between - he's one of the true public servants.

Doheny, Hoffman...both going to have a hard time beating Bill Owens.

  3. Hoffman just dodged a bullet with Barclay's announcement. For awhile there Barclay was beating up on Hoffman for no good reason. Now Doheny can't count on Barclay to continue taking shots at Hoffman going forward.

For Doheny to catch up he will have to go negative on Doug which won't play well with Republicans or Conservatives in NY-23. We don't like dirty politics and the candidates who do it never get rewarded. Lets see what happens in the next four months before things really start to heat up.

  4. Does anyone think he may run instead for the state sEnate> Is there any chance that Nelson will run for that seat... I feel either is possible but the Ritchie thing is wearing thin now. She Ritchie or Nelson cant beat Darrell but I think Will could if he kept the tone of his campaign on the level.

  5. Mr. Barclay was the only State politician to take a public stand against big foreign wind and its destruction of the Lake and River communities. He recognizes that wind development will threaten the boating, fishing, sailing, and seasonal trade many of us are dependent on.

Wind development is the biggest economic and social problem to face our political districts ever, here in the North, and yet you as a political analyst as well as the politicians you write about do not have the courage to address the issue and speak for the citizens.

Even the Oswego Tea Party is asking Doug Hoffman where he is on the wind issue.

The politician who takes the stand against wind fraud, wind welfare, wind money going to foreign companies, the lies about jobs, wind developments destroying the social, economic and aesthetic value of our communities along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River is the politician that will shine in the next campaign.

  6. You still have Doheny listed as a third tier candidate...really? That is absurd.

  7. The GOP now has a choice between "Mr. I Don't Know" and "Mr. Just Say No."

What a deal. And, just think the GOP has the gall to say the DEMS are messed up? LOL
