Did Martha Coakley Just "Scozzafava" Her Race?

Right now, with only 60% of the vote reported in, I am calling the Massachusetts Senate race for Scott Brown.

Clearly, Martha Coakley just "Scozzafava'd" the race for the US Senate, a seat held by the late liberal lion, Senator Teddy Kennedy. Coakley relied on the establishment, underestimated her opponent and took liberal positions on key issues, thus causing her to completely blow it. The key word tonight is arrogance. Scozzafava and Coakley shared the same attitude toward voters. Both politicians thought they were smarter, wiser and entitled to their seats in Congress.

Tonight, the American people in Massachusetts have spoken! Tomorrow the pundits will recognize that the political landscape, as we known it today, will be forever changed.

  6. Unbelievable night for the conservative middle of the road American. Every Democrat in America is now looking over their shoulder. Congressman Maffei, Owens, Arcuri, Murphy, Massa...etc will all be polling their district's constantly to see where they stand. ALL CHALLENGERS WELCOME!!!

  8. Conservatives and Independents just stuffed the Democratic machine in Massachusetts and I expect they could do the same in NY later this year. Obama did about the same compared to McCain in both MA & NY. Except we like our trucks a whole lot more here in NY.

  9. I don't think the comparison is fair. Unlike Coakley, Dede was never arrogant, aloof, gaffe prone, or clueless. Listening Dede at the debates and interviews, I found her to be well informed and articulate.

  10. An interesting campaign fact that is little known in this area is that Brown took a much discussed public stand against wind factories in the Ocean and other parts of MA.

Watch for wind to explode as an issue this fall. And, the Dems have everything to lose on this as they have sat by and let our small towns flounder with financially conflicted leaders who hold wind contracts while making decisions in favor of the wind contractors.

Even Andy Cuomo has let us down by not protecting the wind targeted towns from political and planning board corruption.

    Jefferson's Leaning Left

Watch a wind conflicted town board call Andy Cuomo's wind ethics a waste of time.

  12. Footnote to Brown and Scozzafava races:

    * No puzzle it turns out. Scott Brown is a liberal Massachusetts Republican who attracted Republican and conservative support. He’s perfectly suited for his liberal state electorate.

    * Dede Scozzafava, in fact considerably more conservative than Scott Brown was not nearly so well matched to her intended constituency, the relatively conservative 23rd District that had returned moderate conservative John McHugh since the 1992 election.

    * What this shows, however, is that the conservative base in the United States, far from dragging their party moblike into an unelectable extreme, has made the decentralized decision to support the realistically best candidate they can relative to the context in which he’s being elected.

    * The 23rd special district election can also be seen in this light; throwing Scozzafava overboard made far more sense in the context of that electorate.

From a guy who really knows this stuff and tracks it nation-wide.

    The Real Scott Brown

Good research for those who track this sorta stuff.
