Conservative Split

An old-timer in the North Country's Republican Party establishment, Assemblywoman Janet Duprey, may be getting a primary challenger for her 114th district state assembly seat. Two potential challengers have already emerged and they both appear to have been a product of the aftermath of Dede Scozzafava's nomination for NY-23 last year.

First, it was reported that Paul Maroun of Tupper Lake was coming out swinging. Now there is a story that David Kimmel may put forth his own effort to be the Republican party's nominee for the 114th District. Both Kimmel and Maroun have an extensive military background and both consider themselves conservatives. Local activists have described both men as the same candidate who have different names. Duprey is seen as more of a moderate or liberal, although she repeatedly disputes her record being called "liberal."

Maroun may also be interested in trying for the 23rd Congressional seat so it will be interesting to see how Kimmel's entrance into the 114th will affect his decision to run for state government or the federal job. Either way, Maroun's entrance into either race could result in a split among conservative activists in the 114th state district and also in the 23rd congressional district, conceivably allowing a more moderate candidate to break through with a plurality of the vote.

Maroun has put his name out in the press and has remained open, but uncommitted, to either race. Maroun has also been the most public and outspoken in his criticism of Scozzafava and Duprey saying back in November that, "There are a lot of people upset at the way she (Duprey) handles herself. You can't support a liberal on everything, and then say you are not a liberal. She has got some political problems. I'm a big boy, and she's a big girl, and we'll see what happens."

Paul, we are still waiting to see what your decision is. Can conservatives unite behind a single candidate or will they split their vote between various candidates in 2010, leaving the moderate wing of the party some breathing room and a chance to win the nomination?

  2. Dear Buggs, I'd like to invite you over for a cup of coffee. It would give you a first-hand opportunity to discern for yourself whether or not I am my own man or as the "activists" you mentioned put it "the same candidate". Also, let me know if you want a copy of my mugshot to post with the handsome devils to the right.

  3. I love your new blog, but hate your format. Color on color is difficult for all but the young with sharp eyes to enjoy. It is a little hard to read for the older folks.

  4. Conservatives in NYS, or at least a few, seem to be split even more than we suspected: how about a "North NY and a South NY?" These GOPers think it's a good idea - how about you? If you can't win the old-fashioned way, try another way, right?

    Split NYS into Two States???

  5. Was that picture of Paul Maroun taken at the county jail?

That picture gives a whole new importance to the photographer saying "cheese!"

  6. So funny about the Maroun photo. Hoffman's is pretty classic too. He looks like a little kid in class who was trying his very hardest to hold it in, but sprung a leak right as the photo was taken. He has that "Oh s*%@t, what did I just do" look on his face. So good. And they posted the photo of Dede in her now infamous pink suit (which even she makes fun of now). All in all, an excellent array of snapshots.

  7. Great new site! Just be careful not to let the Francis wingnut drive us all away as he does at so many other sites.

  8. 7:36 ... Tell you what, 7:36. I'll make this my last post here until Anonymous ässhølës like you present themselves in public and debate or opine openly about issues and stop hiding behind an Anonymous moniker ...

Sorry, others here ... but brow-beating and insulting are not sports I don’t care to indulge in here.

    Happy New Year...
